🎨 Estimate Your Paint Needs: No More Guesswork!

Planning to refresh a room with a new coat of paint? It’s a fantastic way to transform a space, but figuring out exactly how much paint you’ll need can be tricky. Too little, and you’re making extra trips to the store; too much, and you’re left with unused cans.

At Interiyo, we’re here to simplify your home improvement projects. Our Paint Quantity Estimator is designed to help you calculate the precise amount of paint required for your room, saving you time, money, and hassle.

How Our Paint Calculator Works

Our intuitive tool takes the guesswork out of paint estimation. Simply input the dimensions of your room, and account for any doors or windows, and we’ll provide a reliable estimate.

  • Room Length, Width, and Height: These measurements define the total surface area of your walls.
  • Measurement Unit: Choose between feet or meters for your dimensions, and the calculator will adjust accordingly.
  • Number of Doors: We factor in the average size of a door to subtract its area from the total paintable surface.
  • Number of Windows: Similar to doors, windows represent areas that won’t need paint.
  • Number of Coats: Whether you’re doing a quick refresh with one coat or a full transformation with two or three, this impacts the total quantity.

Understanding the Calculation Formula

The Core Calculation: Paintable Surface Area

First, we calculate the total wall area of your room. This is done by finding the perimeter of the room and multiplying it by the height of the walls.

Total Wall Area = 2 * (Room Length + Room Width) * Room Height

Next, we subtract the areas of the doors and windows, as these surfaces typically aren’t painted. We use average dimensions for these openings:

  • Average Door Area: Approximately 21 square feet (for a standard 3 ft × 7 ft door).
  • Average Window Area: Approximately 15 square feet (for an average-sized window).
Openings Area = (Number of Doors * Average Door Area) + (Number of Windows * Average Window Area)
Paintable Surface Area = Total Wall Area - Openings Area

Converting Area to Paint Quantity

Once we have the paintable surface area, we use a standard paint coverage rate. A typical gallon of paint covers approximately 350 square feet per coat.

Paint Needed (1 Coat) = Paintable Surface Area / Paint Coverage per Gallon

Finally, we multiply this by the number of coats you plan to apply:

Total Paint Needed = Paint Needed (1 Coat) × Number of Coats

If you enter your dimensions in meters, the final paint quantity will be presented in liters for your convenience, using the appropriate conversion factors.

Important Disclaimer:

The result provided by this calculator is an estimate. Actual paint needed can vary due to several factors, including:

  • Surface Porosity: Rough or unprimed surfaces absorb more paint.
  • Paint Type: Different paint finishes (e.g., flat, eggshell, semi‑gloss) can have slightly different coverage rates.
  • Color Change: Painting a dark wall a light color might require more coats than painting over a similar shade.
  • Application Method: Spraying paint often uses more material than rolling or brushing.
  • Waste: Spills, drips, and roller tray waste can slightly increase actual consumption.

Always consider purchasing a little extra paint (e.g., an additional quart or gallon) to account for touch‑ups or unforeseen circumstances.
